"VODIM" is a long-term program by UBB and Mastercard, dedicated to protecting one of Earth’s most valuable resources – water.
Its goal is to ensure access to clean drinking water for different groups of people at a time when this access is becoming increasingly uncertain.
The Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation (BBF) was selected as a program partner due to its experience in restoring public fountains and its long-standing work on wetland conservation across various regions of Bulgaria.
Within the activities implemented in Vitosha Nature Park, BBF initiated and coordinated:
- Identification of suitable fountains for restoration;
- Expert field surveys with the participation of botanists, zoologists, and hydrologists;
- Creation of a micro-wetland area that supports biodiversity and serves as a small oasis for people, plants, and animals.
The project has been approved by all relevant institutions – Sofia State Forestry Enterprise, Regional Forestry Directorate Sofia, and Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water Sofia.
The restoration of fountains and the creation of the micro-wetland represent the first phase of the program’s long-term efforts toward sustainable water resource management and protection of natural habitats.
Expected results
- Restoration of three public fountains and creation of one micro-wetland area in Vitosha Nature Park;
- Improved conditions for rare and protected species of plants and animals;
- Increased public awareness of the connection between water and biodiversity;
- Encouragement of responsible attitudes toward water as a shared natural resource.
