An international workshop BEST PRACTICES FOR SUSTAINABLE USE AND BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION IN PROTECTED AREAS IN REGARDS OF THE BIOSPHERE RESERVE CONCEPT will take place on 14-16 March 2011 in the town of Tsarevo. The workshop is organised by the Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation (BBF) with the support of the UNESCO Venice Office and the Bulgarian National MAB Committee.
The objective of the seminar is to show best practices of harmonious co-existence between man and nature in area similar to the Strandja Nature Park and to discuss the possibilities for designation of Strandja as the first Bulgarian new-generation Biosphere Park.
Guests and presenters from 7 countries (Austria, Turkey, Slovenia, Greece etc.) will present successful European Biosphere Reserves and Parks, and Parks in a process of designation, as well as experts from the MoEW and from the national MAB Committee.
The Governor of Burgas Region, the Mayor of Tsarevo Municipality, representatives of the Ministry of Environment and Waters, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Regional Forestry Directorate, the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Waters, mayors of settlements, all central and regional authorities and organisations involved in the management and conservation of the Strandja Nature Park, as well as local people and entrepreneurs involved in various pro-biodiversity businesses will participate in the workshop.
A presentation of the Strandja Nature Park and a trip in the park will be arranged on the third day. The program will begin with tasting of the Strandja “manov” honey and will continue with the Bulgari Village which is included in the List of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, the new Strandja Nature Park Information Centre in the Village of Gramatikovo, the Visitor Centre and the Museum Complex in the town of Malko Tarnovo and, of course, the folklore program of the local women from the Architectural Reserve – The Village of Brushlyan. The trip will conclude with a discussion for the potential of the Strandja Nature Park.
The workshop will be organised with the financial support of UNESCO Venice Office and is part of the BBF project: “Collaboration for Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Local Development in Strandja Mountain in Bulgaria”, supported by a grant from Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein through the EEA Financial Mechanism.
BBF will organise a Media Press Conference during the event, on 14 March (Monday) at 12:00 hours in the Zebra Hotel in the town of Tsarevo.
