The GIS platform providing free access to spatial data of BBF was presented at 30 of January, 2015 in front of a diverse audience with a significant interest in the theme. The GIS platform was developed as part of the implementation of „Project GIS“ BG05/586 ”Building Capacity of Non-governmental Organizations, Youths and Citizens for Use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Strengthening the Monitoring Skills and Advocacy of Policies for Regional Sustainable Development”, funded by the NGO Program in Bulgaria under the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism 2009-2014. The implementation of the project and the development of the GIS platform were done in a partnership with the Norwegian Environment Agency.
The conference hall of hotel Gloria Palace gathered 60 citizens, journalists and representatives of governmental and non-governmental organizations and institutions: The Association of the Parks in Bulgaria, the Bulgarian Tourism Chamber, the Bulgarian Society for Protection of Birds, National Nature Protection Service – the Ministry of Environment and Water, the Ministry of Regional Development, the Enviromental Executive Agency, the Ministry of Agriculture and Foods, Basin Directorates, State Forestry Unit of Nevestino, the municipality of Kjustendil, the Directorate of Belasitza Nature Park, The Biology faculty of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” and the University of Forestry, Sofia.
The visitors of the event had the chance to get acquainted with the GIS platform through a real time presentation done by Ljubomir Filipov – the lead GIS expert of the project. The audience got information how to use the platform for their own needs and what is the goal of the project and what activities were implemented during the project execution.
The GIS platform is available on the following address: GIS platform (http://gis.biodiversity.bg/en/GIS_Platform-c109) and is dedicated for free use by citizens, non-governmental and governmental organizations and institutions and businesses. The system provides access to web-map services and its diverse information can be filtered in various ways – key words, protected territories, tourist object, protected species etc.
With the help of the following link: http://93.152.158.68:8080/geoserver/geonode/ows? Users can connect their desktop GIS application with the WMS-services of the Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation and layers, which are a result of BBF work throughout the years, a result of project specific objectives, related with researches on the biodiversity and the sustainable development of a certain region
The layer source can be grouped as follows:
- Field research data: data collected by BBF experts through the utilization of GPS
- Analysis and models: developed by BBF experts and based on use of field data and other data
-Data from other sources: existing vector data or vectorised raster images. The use of the aforementioned as well as the provision of access is in compliance with the regulation requirements. Relevant metadata was developed for all the data. The metadata provides more details for the accessible information.
At present (January 2015) all layers used for the available through the web-portal maps can be used as WMS services. The table lists all data, for which additional WMS services can be provided. In case there is an interest in particular layer, please send your enquiry to: peter.todorov@biodiversity.bg
During the discussion that took place after the presentation the participants in the event showed their positive attitude and highly valued the new means for sharing of spatial data which can be used for monitoring and analysis of what is happening in the environment that surrounds us. Representative of governmental institutions expressed positive opinion for the BBF step towards provision of fast and easy access to spatial data and also expressed willingness for future collaboration for improving the cooperation for exchange of spatial data between the BBF GIS platform and other institutional means for access to spatial data.
Conducting of the final presentation of the project results is part of the project ”Building Capacity of Non-governmental Organizations, Youths and Citizens for Use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Strengthening the Monitoring Skills and Advocacy of Policies for Regional Sustainable Development”, funded by the NGO Program in Bulgaria under the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism 2009-2014.
