The first part of the “Training for youths for monitoring and advocacy through utilization of spatial data in two parts” was conducted successfully

During the three days of the training a series of presentations covering diverse topics related with the biodiversity of Bulgaria, ecological legislation, ecosystem services and possibilities for civic participation, monitoring and advocacy, access to information were presented.
 
Main lectures were Jordanka Dineva – expert advocacy and monitoring from the Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation and Bjorn Arne Naes – expert nature protection and society from Norway and representative of the project partner organization – the Norwegian Environment Agency.
 
The participation of Mr. Naes provided the possibility for the participants to get acquainted with the Norwegian experience in the field of the civic monitoring and advocacy.  Mr. Naes presented the Norwegian point of view and the Norwegian experience in relation to environmental protection and biodiversity conservation and sustainable development and the role of the Norwegian society and institutions in relation to the abovementioned activities.  
 
The last lecture named “The utilization of GIS in nature protection – the power of the exact numbers and the visualization”demonstrated the link among the spatial data and the civic monitoring and advocacy and clearly summarized the benefits of the utilization of the GIS technologies in the monitoring and advocacy, that were constantly mentioned during the three days of the training. The lecture was presented by Tanya Georgieva – Schnell – expert in links between the GIS and nature protection, identification and inventory of spatial data and member of the project team. The lecture also served the needs to make a link between the first part of the training and the theme of the second part of the training.  
 
Beside by the project team members presentations were also given by Radoslav Stanchev, expert from the Bulgarian Environment Executive Agency. With regard to the kind cooperation of Environment Executive Agency the participants in the training had the possibility to learn more about the National System for Monitoring of the Biological Diversity in Bulgaria – its main goals, principles and the way it functions.
 
Lecture covering the topic of “Introduction to the work and responsibilities of the institutions and possibilities for civic participation”was presented by Alexander Dunchev, reperesntative of the Coalition “For the Nature”
The participants in the training managed to exercise and apply in practices the gained during the training knowledge through participation in specially prepared for the needs of the training practical exercises. The discussions with the lectures after the presentations also helped for the full and sterling involvement of the participants in the topics of the training. The overall assessment of the participants for the content of the training and the way it was held was very positive.
 
The second part of the training, which will be focused on the skills for work with spatial data and is dedicated especially to the needs of the monitoring and advocacy will be conducted in October, 2014. The second part of the training will further increase the knowledge of the participants gained in the first part of the training and will contribute for the overall increase of their capacity for monitoring and advocacy through the utilization of spatial data and will also increase their awareness regarding the challenged in realtion to nature protection and sustainable regional development.
