For a second consecutive year BBF is organizing the Green Belt Day celebration - September 24 with a biking tour in the area of the Green Belt. In 2017, all the interested cyclists will be able to cross the Strandzha Mountain, they will not literally cross the border, but they will pass through the preserved areas that were part of the Iron Curtain which separated the socialist countries from the rest of the world 25 years ago.
This year, for the second time, the Green Belt Day will be celebrated on September 24th with various initiatives across the Europe. The Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation (BBF), one of the Green Belt Coordinators in Bulgaria and "Green Strandja" society from Burgas are organizing a "Strandzha - End-to-End. Cycle tour across the Green Belt" event.
Between 22nd and 24th September 2017, cyclists with interest may join the Bike-Adventure and get to know the Green Belt areas in the Bulgarian part of the Strandja Mountain.
On 22 and 23 September, experts from the Strandja Nature Park Directorate will present to the participants some of the area's attractions - rich in biodiversity and with great potential for developing sustainable forms of tourism. The adventure will end in Ahtopol, where the Ahtopol Municipality and the Lume Association are organizing a three-day Fish Festival.
To participate in the Bike Tour, participants need to be able to manage a mountain bike, but no special physical training is required. The whole campaign includes a total of about 120 km of cycling along asphalt and dirt roads. The overnights will be in the Kachul area (on the Veleka River near the village of Gramatikovo) and in the town of Ahtopol (on the Black Sea Coast).
On Saturday night, on the eve of Green Belt Day, the Balkan Green Belt Initiative will be presented at the Chitalishte of Ahtopol and on the next day - on September 24, a walking tour along the rocky shore of the sea to the mouth of the Veleka River will be organised, as well as a boating trip along the river.
The promotion of the Green Belt in Bulgaria happened with the support of the German organization EuroNatur, which is a partner of the Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation in its work on the Balkan Green Belt.
