The second day was focused on Sustainable Tourism and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and was full of beautiful views, delicious products and interesting lectures.
First, the participants in the Summer University of Unesco MAB program tasted the delicious production of “At the Foot of the Balkan Mountain” Farm. They were delighted and totally convinced that the Central Balkan region also has delicious and interesting local products that can be offered in restaurants in the area of Plovdiv or even in Sofia.
After that the young experts had the opportunity to get acquainted with the natural richness of the Central Balkan National Park and to learn more about the management of the protected areas in one of the offices of the Directorate in Kalofer. Sergey Aleksandrov from the Park Directorate explained about the importance of the Park and its extremely rich biodiversity. After hearing the theory, it was time for practice and the participants were given the chance to explore this biodiversity by themselves. They went on a walk through the White River eco-trail. The eco-trail and the beautiful view impressed our participants so much that they were stopping at every step to take pictures. Which made the climbing a little harder :) After a tasty lunch provided by Lift Sopot, the participants headed back to Chateau Copsa.
The afternoon session was devoted to Education for Sustainable Development by Prof. Michael Scoullos. He presented the evolution of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and how its philosophy, concepts and methods can be linked with the management of BRs and other designated areas. There was also time for group work in the following four groups: large-scale joint communication projects promoting the MAB programme (locally and internationally); connecting and involving young people into the MAB network; enhancement of local products and tourist services for the sustainable development of the territory and Education for Sustainable Development projects within BRs.
Later in the evening after the delicious dinner at Chateau Copsa everybody went to have a rest, eager to know what to expect on the third day.
