EU scales up its effort to protect wilderness
Brussels, Belgium – The European Commission calls for ‘wilderness’, a new approach in nature conservation additional to the traditional management approaches. Wilderness refers to large natural areas without human intervention, governed solely by nature. A European Presidency conference was held on 16-17 November to share good examples and to discuss several issues important for a Wilder Europe, such as vision, benefits, management, policy, communication and funding. Central and East European NGOs took part in the process.

The winners in photo competition for Atanasovsko Lake
Atanasovsko Lake inspired 13 lovers of photography who participated with their pictures in the photo contest "Atanasovsko Lake - people, birds and salt”. Beginning of the contest was launched in August on the occasion of 30th Anniversary of the lake as a protected area. Fifty-three photographs competed for the prize - participation in a special photo tour around Bourgas lakes. Participation in the tour of the lakes Vaya, Atanassovsko and Mandra - Poda complex will make the authors of the winning photographs of the first three places. These are Jecho Planinski, Didi Andreeva and Dimitar Gradinarov.

BBF organize training for the local people in Strandja
On 27 and 28 September 2010 in Brushlyan in Strandja, the Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation in partnership with the Strandja Nature Park Directorate will organize the seminar: Sustainable local development and development of Strandja Regional Trade Mark. The interest of local people is very high - the seminar will be attended by over 50 people from 15 villages in Strandja Nature Park - these are mainly owners of guest houses, certified by Strandja Regional Brand, tourist guides, producers of dew honey (manov honey) and other local entrepreneurs, developing sustainable businesses. The lead speaker will be Mr. Bjorn Arne Naess of the Norwegian Directorate of Nature Management, a partner of BBF in the project. Other lecturers will be representatives of the Ministry of Economy and Energy, lawyers, experts in the field of ecology and sustainable development.

The Norwegian Ambassador visited the BBF-office in Burgas
The Ambassador of Norway in our country Ms. Tove Skarstein visited today the office of the Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation in Burgas and met with the team working on Project: Cooperation for biodiversity conservation and sustainable local development in Strandja Mountain. The project implements with financial support of Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein through the Financial mechanism of the European Economic Area, and a main partner of the Norwegian side is the Directorate of Nature Management at the Norwegian Ministry of Environment.

School competition in Kostinbrod Municipality
On May 20, 2010 at the community center "Ivan Vazov" in the town of Kostinbrod held traditional municipal race - quiz Natura 2000 - the nature of my native region, organized by BBF in cooperation with the municipality. In the contested race with knowledge of the nature involved teams of four schools. Ten questions with a small lead over Peturch village representatives, first returned to the team "Marbled Polecat" in school Dr Petar Beron.

Bike tour among whole Strandja just finished
Successfully completed the largest Strandja biking expedition organized by BBF. It began on May 8, 2010 during the Festival of Zelenika. The tour was devoted to cross-border partnership for nature conservation and development of eco-tourism in the Bulgarian and the Turkish part of Strandja (Yildiz). 13 participants with mountain wheels pass the distance of 350 km from Malko Tarnovo to Istanbul for 6 days. Everywhere they met the hospitality of local people and discovered how beautiful and untouched by national border is the nature of Strandja.

Rhododendron Festival 2010
Over 800 people attended the eighth edition of the Rhododendron Festival, which took place on 7 and 8 May in Strandja Nature Park. The festival started in the Tulpan area near the village of Zabernovo with a rich and attractive programme - performances of folklore groups from Strandja villages, contest of bagpipers from the whole country, tasting the various homemade specialties, contest for ritual bread making, demonstration of various crafts and many others. The bravest climbed on rope gardens installed between ancient oaks - a special attraction for young and old participants.

Strandja on the Green Days in Sofia
From 15 to 18 April in Sofia the GREEN DAYS Eco-Festival will be held in the garden of the Ivan Vazov National Theatre. The program is rich and diverse - it includes market of products produced on nature friendly way, presentation of opportunities for eco-tourism, green film festival, photo exhibitions and competition, various workshops, an international conference on sustainable tourism, etc.

Our man went to the USA
Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation will be represented by Rumyana Ivanova upcoming three-week training in the field of environmental protection in America. Training is funded by America for Bulgaria Foundation and organized by the Institute of International Education - New York. It will involve 15 representatives of the Ministry of Environment and Water, and five representatives of environmental NGOs.

Meetings with local communities in 5 municipalities
In the last days of March Coalition "For the Nature in Bulgaria has launched a series of 5 information meetings with local communities near natural areas valuable: the Rila, Pirin, Rhodope, Kamchia and golf course. Besides that nature in these areas is extremely valuable, it is highly vulnerable to planned or already started major investment proposals.

A Life for the Bourgas Lakes
BBF is a partner of BSPB in the second project under the LIFE + for the Burgas lakes.The project aims to provide long-term and self-protection Bourgas lakes and their diversity of species in favor of the citizens of Bourgas and Bulgaria. In this regard, for the first time establish a partnership between organizations from different sectors to work together in an efficient and mutually beneficial manner for the sake of a common cause.
