Cross Border cooperation in the frame of Green Belt
A workshop “Planning Cross Border Cooperation between Bulgaria and Macedonia in the Frame of the Green Belt Initiative” was organised by the Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation /BBF/ on 17-18.11.2006 in Bor Hunting Lodge, Kjustendil, Bulgaria. The aims of the workshop were to exchange experience on conservation projects for Green Belt areas in Bulgaria and Macedonia and to plan the next steps of cooperation. Twenty participants from NGOs, scientific and state institutions from both countries presented their activities for protection of the Jablanitsa and Pelister Mountains in Mecedonia, and Belasitsa, Pirin and Rhodope mountains in Bulgaria.

Competition for financing of students masters thesis

BBF will announce for the third time the competition for financing of the students’ masters’ thesis in the field of biodiversity conversation and protected areas management. All students from Bulgarian Universities could apply with project proposals, if they are in the scope of the competition:

  • protection of the world threatened species;
  • management of protected areas; 
  • mechanisms for sustainable use of nature resources; 
  • eco-tourism development, bio-agriculture, etc.

BLACK SEA DAY WILL BE CELEBRATE IN KALIAKRA VISITORS CENTER

For the first time the new exhibition of Kaliakra Visitors center in Bulgarevo will be presented to the general public.

BBF team will use the International Black Sea Day to acquaint the local people with the richness and the problems of the Black Sea.

On October 31th 2 groups of pupils and 1 group of students will visited the Center and will study for the fishes, dolphins and seals. For sure the interactive installations and interesting presented information will involve the kids and make them real friends of the sea. In the afternoon will be the celebration for the “older” people, who will have a chance to watch the new actual film – “The cry of the Sea”. The authors of the film are Tzvetelina Atanasova and Valentin Gonevski from BNT.

BBF team participated in the Pan-European IUCN meeting

More than 200 delegates from 37 national Governments, the European Commission, five UN organizations, 88 NGOs and private companies debated ways to activate the full potential and capacity of the Union. Among them were 4 representatives of BBF. Participants set the stage for a process to develop a vision for European nature beyond 2010. The participants called for seeing nature and its services as the foundation for economic and social welfare. The meeting was also important for the further development of the Union’s activities in Europe.

BBF continues with the conservation lectures

From November 8th 2006, BBF continues with the traditional lectures in the Biology Faculty of the University of Sofia. As usual the lectures will start every Wednesday at 18.30.

This year we will go further and from the theory will “jump” in the practice. Every two weeks BBF will organize study trip to different conservation regions or projects in Bulgaria and abroad.

1st European Congress of Conservation Biology
The interest shown in this event (22-26 August 2006 – Eger, Hungary) confirms the view that such a meeting is long overdue. With world-leading plenary speakers, over 850 abstracts submitted, 17 symposia and a good range of workshops and training sessions, the Congress promises to be one of the largest-ever gatherings of conservation biologists. But it is more than just a scientific meeting.

STRANDJA HONEY FESTIVAL IN TZAREVO

Bee-honey cooperation “Strandja special honey” in cooperation with Municipality of Tzarevo, Association of the biology bee-keeping and Regional office for agricultural advices – Bourgas, organizing the Third international festival “Tzarevo – the kingdom of the Strandja honey”. The Festival is held under the patronage of the Mayor of Tzarevo and with the financial support of Biodiversity Foundation and GTZ.

The Festival will be organized from 1st to 6th August 2006. You are welcome to visit it and to try the unique Strandja special honey

BBF investigating the damages of the floods in Rhodopes

Three teams of different experts collect BBF to evaluate river ecosystems, damaged by the floods in Rhodope region. For 5 days, 12 experts – botanists, zoologists, etc. will analyze the relations between the size and the type of the damages, different habitats, infrastructure and management of the rivers. The studies of Chepelarska, Arda, Vurbitza will be implemented.

New protected area will be announced in Kjustendil region
BBF expert participated in the commission for the announcement of a new PA – “The valley of Bistritza river – Gurljan gorge”. The session of the commission was on July 14th with the participation of RIEW Sofia, MRD, MAF, Regional administration and Municipality of Kjustendil, mayors, NGOs.
