Cleaning of the Shabla beach

BBF supported the initiative of the Mayor of Ezeretz village - Mr. Nellko Jordanov for the cleaning of the beach as a part of the protected area “Shabl Lake”. On July 1st more than 60 volunteers participated in the campaign and collected 3 trailers with waste. The participants were local inhabitants, volunteers from NGOs. The Minister of the State administration – Mr. Nikolai Vasilev, who just visited the Residence in Shabla also took part in the action. The campaign was supported by local businessmen and presented by local and national media.

Biodiversity Emergency Fund
The total amount for the Emergency Fund for the year 2005 is 10000 BGN. Actions are going to be supported until the total amount is spent. The proposed actions should be feasible and cost effective. Ideal amounts will be from 150 till 1500 BGN but BBF will be flexible to consider higher costs depending on the priority of the action.

GREEN BELT INITIATIVE
The opening of the borders between Eastern and Western Europe reveals that exactly the regions along the Iron Curtain have turned into especially valuable refuges for many threatened animal and plant species. In recognition of the uniqueness of these areas IUCN, the German Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) and German non-governmental organisations launch the European Green Belt Initiative. It should contribute to the conservation of valuable natural sites along the borders and should stimulate their connectivity in an ecological network. The Balkan states join the initiative in 1999 when the concept of the Balkan Green Belt is conceived.

A court for the violator
16 turtles were found by police officer of Harmanli RPD in the car of local resident. The Police officer immediately informed RIEW Haskovo and Georgi Popgeorgiev from BSPB Plovdiv. The expert assessment was made by Stefan Avramov from BBF. He values the damage for 8000 leva. The criminal trail will be next week and the violator may pay till 5000 leva and stay in prison till 5 years.

Zelenika Festival in Strandja
The forth edition of the Zelenika Festival will be organized on May 13th and 14th 2006. This year it will be held in the smallest village of Strandja – Slivarovo (situated behind the border), as well as in the Turkish part of Strandja. The guests of the Fest will visit Dupnitza Cave, rock monastery “St.Nikola” on the coast of the Black Sea and the capital of the last Thracian dynasty – Vise town. The Fest is organizing by the Park Directorate Strandja and Regional Forestry Bourgas. Our partner in Turkey is the biggest ecological Foundation – TEMA.
